The Daniel L. Migliore Distinguished Presidential Award for Faithful Leadership is the highest annual honor bestowed by the Office of the President of 星空传媒. Named in tribute to beloved theologian and teacher Professor Daniel L. Migliore, this award celebrates individuals whose lives and work embody the very heart of Christian discipleship鈥攃ourageous leadership, theological depth, and faithful service in the world.

Rooted in the spirit of Professor Migliore鈥檚 legacy and shaped by the enduring phrase drawn from his seminal work, Faith Seeking Understanding, this award recognizes those who do not merely profess belief, but actively pursue the life of the mind in service to the church and the world. Recipients are exemplars of Christian wisdom, compassion, and integrity鈥攖hose whose leadership flows from their theological convictions and bears witness to the redemptive power of the Gospel in their communities and vocations.

This award may be given to alums, faculty, staff, trustees, partners in ministry, or friends of the Seminary, regardless of denominational affiliation, who demonstrate extraordinary commitment to the cause of Christ, the flourishing of God鈥檚 people, and the renewal of the world.

Criteria for Selection:

Nominees for the Daniel L. Migliore Distinguished Presidential Award for Faithful Leadership should meet one or more of the following criteria:

  1. Theological Leadership: Demonstrates a life shaped by thoughtful, rigorous theological reflection in the tradition of Reformed inquiry鈥攆aith genuinely seeking understanding.
  2. Public Witness: Embodies the Christian faith in ways that transform communities and public life through acts of justice, mercy, peacemaking, or reconciliation.
  3. Vocational Excellence: Models excellence in ministry, education, public service, or other vocations, reflecting a deep sense of divine calling.
  4. Faithful Presence: Serves the church and the world in a spirit of humility, hospitality, and hope, offering leadership that is pastoral, prophetic, and profoundly human.
  5. Princeton Seminary Connection (not required but valued): Engages with the Seminary鈥檚 mission or has been formed by its community of faith and scholarship.

Award Presentation:

The Daniel L. Migliore Distinguished Presidential Award for Faithful Leadership will be presented annually at one of three signature events:

  1. Alumni Reunions: Ideal for recipients with Seminary connections鈥攁lums, former faculty, or partners in ministry whose stories inspire the broader alumni community.
  2. The Annual Fundraising Gala (or President鈥檚 Dinner): Best suited for broader audiences, particularly recipients whose impact exemplifies the Seminary鈥檚 values on a national or global stage.
  3. The Annual Board Chair’s Dinner: Best suited for recipients whose leadership, vocation, or public witness merits recognition in a more intimate setting with trustees, senior leaders, and invited guests. This setting is especially appropriate for recipients whose work reflects the Seminary鈥檚 highest ideals and offers meaningful opportunities for board-level engagement, presidential hospitality, and institutional relationship-building.

Nomination and Selection Process:

  • Nominations will be solicited annually from faculty, trustees, alumni leaders, and senior staff.
  • A Presidential Selection Committee, chaired by the President and including 3鈥4 advisors from academic and advancement leadership, will review nominations and recommend a recipient by early spring.
  • The honoree will be notified privately and invited to the award ceremony, with public announcements to follow.

Rationale for Naming the Award:

Professor Daniel L. Migliore is one of the most beloved theological educators in Princeton Seminary鈥檚 history. A teacher of extraordinary clarity and compassion, his work shaped generations of ministers, scholars, and lay leaders across the globe. Faith Seeking Understanding, now in its fourth edition, has become a cornerstone of theological formation, offering a vision of Christian belief that is both intellectually vibrant and spiritually grounded.

To name this award in his honor is to affirm the enduring power of theological imagination and to remind the world that faithful leadership is born not of status or charisma alone, but from a life committed to discerning the mind of Christ.

Recipients

Marilynne Robinson is the author of Gilead, winner of the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the National Book Critics Circle Award; Home, winner of the Orange Prize and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize; Lila, winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award; and Jack, a New York Times bestseller. Her first novel, Housekeeping, won the PEN/Hemingway Award.

Her nonfiction works include The Givenness of ThingsWhen I Was a Child I Read BooksAbsence of MindThe Death of Adam, and Mother Country. In 2012, she received the National Humanities Medal from President Barack Obama for 鈥渉er grace and intelligence in writing,鈥 and in 2025 she received the inaugural Lewis H. Lapham Award for Literary Excellence from Harper鈥檚 Magazine.

In addition to receiving the 2026 Daniel L. Migliore Distinguished Presidential Award for Faithful Leadership, Robinson delivered a commencement address, entitled:

In 2025, Seminary established the Daniel L. Migliore Distinguished Presidential Award for Faithful Leadership and honored Migliore as the inaugural recipient.

A member of the faculty for more than five decades, Migliore joined 星空传媒 in 1966 and retired as the Charles Hodge Chair of Systematic Theology. A distinguished Reformed theologian, he was widely respected for his scholarship, his service to the global church, and his enduring commitment to theological education. 

Migliore鈥檚 teaching and writing shaped generations of students and contributed significantly to contemporary systematic theology. Known for his clarity, intellectual rigor, and pastoral sensibility, he helped form pastors, scholars, and church leaders who continue to serve Christ鈥檚 Church around the world.
